When I was a teenager, I watched a Pastor illustrating why Jesus had to die. Then he pulled from his pocket a pair of scissors and cut the rope into two. Afterwards, he used a knot to put the two pieces together.

Obviously, it worked up to a certain extent but the rope had lost its wholeness. He explained that God commanded man to offer animal sacrifices to receive atonement but it could not restore his relationship with humans to its former glory. Then he picked a red color piece of cloth which he said is the blood of Jesus Christ and wrapped it around the knot.

Next, he pulled it out. I was amazed by what I saw. The knot had disappeared and the rope was whole once again. As whole as new! That was 20 years ago, but I still remember the message behind the trick. Magic tricks are perfect ways to illustrate biblical truths.

Return to Following Directions. Teaching the skill of following directions requires a little hocus-pocus in this lesson. Students re-create magic tricks, evaluate the clarity of the instructions, and teach an apprentice how to perform a trick.

Materials Needed. Magic is a topic that naturally interests and amazes students. In this lesson, students follow instructions to perform a magic trick, critique its directions, and teach another student what they have learned. To begin, ask your students to define magic. What kinds of tricks do magicians perform? How do the students believe that magicians get their training? Explain that in this activity, the students will pretend to be the apprentices of Melmoe the Magnificent, an experienced, but aging, entertainer who is looking for new material.

Read the following scenario to set the stage for the activity. Find a new and amazing trick, practice it, evaluate it, bring it back to me with some cue cards, and I'll give it a go. If you do well, I'll put the illusion in my act, and I'll make you my assistant! With that, Melmoe laughed and then coughed loudly. He took a deep breath, wrapped himself with his cape and, in the blink of an eye, disappeared.

On a sheet of paper, the students should use the rubric above to assess the quality of the trick's directions. They must give the directions a poor, an average, or an excellent rating in each category and list ways that the directions could be improved. Distribute index cards to the students or groups. As a culminating activity and practice, students should create cue cards for the trick.

That cue cards should include a few steps as well as dialogue prompts. Students should use the cue cards as they teach one other student to perform the trick. Remind the students to select a learner who is new to the trick.

Based on their experience, ask the students to explain why magicians often follow these rules. Assume the role of Melmoe the Magnificent and choose three outstanding sets of instructions created by students. What long term market bets are good value.

The taxi driver from the airport was friendly.

And of course our tour guide on Day 2 to visit the glaciers, volcano, and waterfalls was excellent. Incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and entertaining. All we needed to do was show up and enjoy the ride. From the prompt and efficient email advice from Larus when first asking about self drive tours around Iceland and personal preferences, etc - to the amazingly detailed personalised schedule and marked out map we received before setting off, we have been so impressed with Nordic Visitor.

On arrival you are met by a driver who hands over your bag with your mobile phone (with NV's contact details preprogrammed in), another huge road map book and your various trip vouchers.

We chose the 'quality' room package for the Iceland Full Circle self drive and were more than happy with all the accommodations we had except one 'blip' which we were pleased that NV's response as soon as we got home and confirmed in more detail what we had reported by phone at the time.

Now we are home, our advice is that this is a well planned tour to see the main highlights all the way round - with just enough time for your detours for photo's, hiking or various other pursuits - depending upon sunset times for your trip. If doing again we would break the trip over in Eggilsstadr for one night, and use the time available to go over to Seydisffjordur and the perhaps down the Lagarfljot area - we had to push through here onto Myvatn and wondered if we were missing much, plus that is a long days drive.
